Ingredients

For the Base:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1/4 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1-2 tablespoons cold water (as needed)

For the Vanilla Custard Filling:

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/4 teaspoon salt

4 large egg yolks

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

For the Topping:

1 cup heavy cream

2 tablespoons powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Fresh berries (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Base:

    - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

      - In a medium bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add in the cubed butter and mix with your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

        - Add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough just comes together. Do not overwork it.

          - Press the dough evenly into the bottom of an 8x8 inch baking dish. Prick the surface with a fork to prevent bubbling.

            - Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until lightly golden. Allow to cool completely.

              Make the Vanilla Custard:

                - In a medium saucepan over medium heat, whisk together 1 1/2 cups of milk, sugar, cornstarch, and salt until smooth.

                  - In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks with the remaining 1/2 cup of milk until combined. Gradually add the egg mixture to the saucepan.

                    - Cook the custard mixture, constantly whisking, until it thickens and begins to bubble, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat.

                      - Stir in the butter and vanilla extract until fully incorporated. Pour the custard over the cooled base, smoothing it out evenly.

                        - Refrigerate for at least 3 hours or until set.

                          Prepare the Topping:

                            - In a medium bowl, whisk the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.

                              - Once the custard is set, spread the whipped cream over the top of the custard layer evenly.

                                Assemble and Serve:

                                  - Cut the squares into desired sizes and serve chilled. Optionally, garnish with fresh berries for added flavor and presentation.
