Orange Velvet Cake

A delightful twist on a classic dish.

Ingredients

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 ½ cups granulated sugar

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature

4 large eggs, at room temperature

Zest of 2 large oranges

1 cup fresh orange juice (about 2-3 oranges)

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 teaspoons orange extract

Cream cheese frosting (store-bought or homemade; see below)

Instructions

Prepare your oven and pans: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.

Combine the dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Cream the butter and sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.

Add eggs and flavorings: Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then, mix in the orange zest, vanilla extract, and orange extract until fully combined.

Mix in the buttermilk: Pour in half of the buttermilk and the fresh orange juice, mixing until just combined. Gradually add the remaining flour mixture, alternating with the buttermilk, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just smooth; do not overmix.

Bake the cakes: Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Prepare cream cheese frosting: While the cakes are cooling, prepare your cream cheese frosting. If using homemade, beat together 1 (8 oz) package of cream cheese, ½ cup unsalted butter, and 4 cups powdered sugar until creamy and smooth. Add a splash of orange juice for an extra zing if desired.

Frost the cake: Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of cream cheese frosting on top, then place the second cake layer on top, repeating the process. Finally, add the third layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.

Garnish and serve: Decorate with candied orange slices or an additional sprinkle of orange zest if desired. Slice, serve, and enjoy the delightful flavors of Orange Velvet Cake!
