Ingredients

1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, sliced

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup maple syrup (optional, for serving)

Fresh berries (optional, for garnish)

Powdered sugar (optional, for serving)

Instructions

Prepare the Dish: Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking.

Arrange the Bread: Layer the sliced bread in the baking dish, ensuring they are neatly arranged but not overly packed, allowing for the egg mixture to seep through.

Make the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.

Combine the Mixture: Pour the egg mixture evenly over the arranged bread slices, ensuring all pieces are soaked. Use a spatula to gently press down on the bread if needed.

Chill: Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or preferably overnight. This allows the flavors to meld and the bread to absorb the custard.

Preheat Oven: When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake: Remove the plastic wrap and, if desired, sprinkle a little extra cinnamon or sugar on top. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden and set.

Serve: Allow to cool slightly before cutting into squares. Serve warm with maple syrup, fresh berries, and a dusting of powdered sugar if desired.
