Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 cup fresh blackberries (plus extra for garnish)

1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper for easy removal.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).

Add Wet Ingredients: Add in the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then, mix in the vanilla extract and buttermilk until combined.

Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Fold in Blackberries and Chocolate Chips: Gently fold in the blackberries and semi-sweet chocolate chips until they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool the Cake: Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Garnish (Optional): Once cooled, garnish with additional blackberries on top for presentation. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Serve: Slice the cake and enjoy it on its own or serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra treat!
