EASY FRIED CHEESE BITES

A delightful twist on a classic dish.

Ingredients

1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup of all-purpose flour

1/2 cup of breadcrumbs (panko works best)

1 large egg

1 teaspoon of garlic powder

1 teaspoon of dried Italian herbs (or oregano/basil)

Salt and pepper to taste

Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

Marinara sauce for dipping (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Cheese: In a bowl, take the shredded mozzarella cheese and shape it into small bite-sized balls (about 1 inch in diameter). Place them on a plate and freeze for about 30 minutes to firm them up.

Set Up Breading Station: In one bowl, place the flour. In a second bowl, whisk the egg with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Italian herbs. In a third bowl, add the breadcrumbs.

Breading the Cheese Bites: Remove the cheese balls from the freezer. Roll each ball first in flour, then dip in the egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs. Ensure they are coated evenly.

Heat the Oil: In a deep skillet or frying pan, pour enough oil for shallow frying (about 1 inch deep). Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping in a small piece of bread, and if it sizzles, it's ready.

Fry the Bites: Carefully add the breaded cheese bites to the hot oil in batches. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Serve: Enjoy them hot with marinara sauce on the side for dipping!
