Ingredients

4 medium-sized Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored

1 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/4 cup milk

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1 1/2 cups water

Optional: whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for serving

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and cinnamon, then set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, blend the softened butter and granulated sugar until creamy.

Beat in the milk, vanilla extract, flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8-inch thick. Cut into squares large enough to wrap around each apple, approximately 6x6 inches.

Place one peeled and cored apple in the center of each square. Fill the core of each apple with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.

Fold the corners of the dough over the apple, sealing it tightly to prevent any filling from escaping.

Arrange the wrapped apples in a greased baking dish.

In a saucepan, bring the water and brown sugar to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Pour this syrup over the dumplings in the baking dish.

Bake the dumplings in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the dumplings are golden brown and the apples are tender.

Once baked, allow the dumplings to cool slightly before serving. These are delightful on their own or served warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
