Ingredients

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 ½ cups granulated sugar

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup whole milk

3 large eggs

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup packed brown sugar

½ cup heavy cream

1 cup powdered sugar

1 teaspoon corn syrup

1 teaspoon vanilla extract for caramel frosting

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. This should take about 3-5 minutes.

Add the eggs to the mixture, one at a time, making sure each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Mix in the vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the whole milk. Start and end with the flour mixture, mixing until just combined.

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.

While the cakes are cooling, prepare the caramel frosting. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the brown sugar and heavy cream. Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a boil, then let it boil for 2 minutes without stirring.

Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the powdered sugar, corn syrup, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and let cool slightly.

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of caramel frosting on top. Place the second layer on top and cover the entire cake with the remaining frosting.

Allow the cake to set for at least 30 minutes before serving. Drizzle any remaining caramel sauce on top, if desired.
