Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of American cheese (or your preferred cheese)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 tbsp butter (for frying)

Optional: Pickles, for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Beef: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix until just combined, then form into two equal-sized patties.

Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of butter and heat over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Place a slice of cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking, allowing it to melt.

Assemble the Patty Melt: On a slice of rye bread, place one patty with melted cheese, top with caramelized onions, and cover with another slice of rye bread. Repeat with the second patty.

Grill the Sandwiches: Wipe the skillet clean and return it to medium heat. Grill each sandwich for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy.

Serve: Cut the patty melts in half and serve hot, optionally with pickles on the side.

Prep Time: 10 minutes | Total Time: 40 minutes | Servings: 2 sandwiches
