Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk mixed with 1/2 tsp vinegar)

2 cups peeled, cored, and chopped apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)

1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

1/4 cup brown sugar (for topping)

1 tsp cinnamon (for topping)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x5-inch loaf pan.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Gently fold in the chopped apples and nuts (if using) until evenly distributed.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.

In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and remaining cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter in the loaf pan.

Bake in the preheated oven for 55-65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
