To truly appreciate churros poppers, it’s essential to understand the cultural significance of churros themselves. The history of churros dates back to the 16th century when they were introduced to Europe by Portuguese sailors who encountered similar treats in China. The Spanish quickly adopted this pastry, and it soon became a beloved snack across the country. Traditionally, churros were made by mixing flour, water, and salt to create a dough that was then piped into hot oil for frying, resulting in the crispy, airy treat we know today.

Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup water

1/4 cup unsalted butter

2 tbsp granulated sugar

1/4 tsp salt

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp baking powder

Canola oil (for frying)

1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)

1 tsp ground cinnamon

Chocolate sauce (for dipping)

Caramel sauce (for dipping)

Instructions

In a medium saucepan, combine the water, butter, sugar, and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat.

Once boiling, remove from heat and add the flour and baking powder. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a dough.

Let the dough cool for about 5 minutes, then add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and cohesive.

Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip.

In a deep skillet or fryer, heat canola oil to 350°F (175°C).

Pipe small, bite-sized pieces of dough directly into the hot oil, cutting them with scissors to the desired size. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown, flipping them halfway through.

Remove the churro poppers from the oil and drain on paper towels.

In a separate bowl, mix 1/2 cup granulated sugar with 1 tsp cinnamon. Roll each churro popper in the cinnamon-sugar mixture while they are still warm.

Serve warm with chocolate and caramel sauce for dipping.
