Turkey melts have carved out a special place in sandwich culture, but their origins are somewhat murky. The concept of melting cheese over meat on bread is a universally appealing idea, with variations found in numerous cuisines. The turkey melt, specifically, began to gain popularity in the late 20th century as turkey became more accessible and appreciated as a leaner alternative to traditional meats like beef or pork. It’s not just a sandwich; it’s a testament to the versatility of turkey and the creativity of home cooks and chefs alike.

Ingredients

4 slices sourdough bread

8 oz cooked turkey breast, sliced

4 slices sharp cheddar cheese

4 strips bacon, cooked until crispy

2 tbsp mayonnaise

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

2 tsp olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh arugula or spinach for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prep the Bacon: If you haven't done so, cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove and let drain on paper towels.

Prepare the Spread: In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise and Dijon mustard until well combined. Season with a little salt and pepper to taste.

Assemble the Sandwich: Take two slices of sourdough bread and spread the mayonnaise mixture on one side of each slice. Layer on the turkey slices, followed by the crispy bacon strips, then top with cheddar cheese. Finish by placing the other slice of sourdough on top, spread side down.

Grill the Sandwich: Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and add the olive oil. Once hot, place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.

Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them rest for a minute. Optional: Top with fresh arugula or spinach for a crunchy, fresh addition. Slice in half and serve warm.
