Dezza Coffee is an e-commerce coffee brand inspired by authentic and great-tasting Indonesian coffee. In this interview with Ownr, Aldo, Founder of Dezza Coffee shares his experience starting a business and shares his advice for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Introduce us to Dezza Coffee
Aldo: Dezza Coffee is an e-commerce coffee brand that aims to provide our customers with the best tasting and most authentic Indonesian coffee available in the market. We also package and serve our coffee in innovative single-serve pour over coffee filters so that anyone can enjoy our blends without any fancy equipment, in the most convenient way possible. Dezza Coffee is awesome to take with you if you’re going on a camping/hiking trip, a beach day, in the office, or if you’re looking to enjoy premium coffee while having your alone time at the comfort of your own home!
We also focus on making a social impact to the Indonesian community by donating a meal for every box sold to an Indonesian orphanage in-need. At the same time, we provide profit sharing to all our employees and pay a competitive price to all our suppliers to ensure their well beings are taken care of. We pride ourselves in keeping our promise to making a social impact, even if that may mean sacrificing growth or reinvestment opportunities for our business.
What inspired you to start a business?
Aldo: It boils down to us wanting to share our love and passion for great tasting Indonesian coffee to our fellow Canadians while making an impact to our communities back home in Indonesia.
Being an immigrant from Indonesia myself and not being able to go home or travel as much, we are making it our mission to bring a taste of our home over to Canada.
We decided to take the leap in becoming a business owner as our roastery has been around for 3 generations. We are (and always will be) a family run operation. Throughout our existence, we’ve spent all of our efforts in roasting and exporting our coffee to the Asian and Middle Eastern market, but wanted to introduce our product to the North American market by creating our own personal brand.
When you decided to make your business official, what did you tackle first?
Aldo: Definitely registering our business and brand name in Canada. Ownr was a huge help in this as they answered all our questions and was always proactive in providing top of the line customer service. I’d highly recommend Ownr to my peers looking who are looking to start their own businesses as well.
What has been your biggest success or earliest win in running your business thus far?
Aldo: Our biggest success so far is that we’ve had very positive feedback for both taste and convenience in our market research! So we’re very excited that we’ve officially launched our brand!
In addition, we’ve secured contracts with a luxury boutique hotel in Bali and a famous coffee shop chain in Jakarta. Although our primary market is here in Canada, we’re happy to see that people of various backgrounds love our products.
What has been your biggest challenge in running your business thus far?
Aldo: Our biggest challenge has been to wear so many different hats at once and learn everything as we go. At the same time, it has been rewarding to see how our plans have unfolded and to see our business making progress one step at a time!
Are there any tips you would like to share with other business owners?
Aldo: For us, it’s to always be curious to learn about our customers while having a drive for continuous improvement. We understand that we’ll never be perfect but when we put customer satisfaction as our top priority and take their feedback seriously, it helps us understand our audience a lot better!
